Why Shame and Guilt Are Functional For Mental Health

Shame and guilt are two emotions that we all feel and as uncomfortable as we all feel with those feelings, they are necessary for us to do well socially. When we feel these things we tend to feel them for ourselves and for other people, they keep us in tact emotionally so that we can better alter our behavior and do better in the world around us. Shame is a much better emotion that will help you to adapt socially than guilt is, though we aren’t sure why.

Key Takeaways:

  • Guilt and shame are emotions that all humans experience at one time or another throughout life.
  • Guilt and shame are critical elements in achieving a prosocial life.
  • You can overcome shame and guilt by avoiding toxic self-evaluations.
