The 1 Day Breakaway Course teaches delegates all about the underpinning legal knowledge, conflict management skills, and disengagement techniques necessary to enable them to be able to avoid and escape from a physical assault at work. Who_is_this_course_aimed_at   The 1 Day Breakaway Course has been specifically developed for those who work with children, the elderly, vulnerable adults and lone workers in the community. Specific settings include:
  • Healthcare (both NHS & Private healthcare Nursing Staff).
  • Residential Care staff.
  • Higher Education teaching staff & Education Security Staff.
  • Community Safety Wardens.
  • Enforcement Officers.
  • Probation Staff.
  • Housing Association employees.
  • Council employees.

Learning Outcomes

The course covers the following:

  • Introduction & Welcome (setting the scene).
  • Effective De-Escalation & Conflict Management Skills (including tried and tested ‘help’ scripts).
  • Delegates will have a baseline knowledge of how to disengage from holding and how to defend from kicks, punches.
  • Delegates will understand the importance of documentation and record keeping and correct debriefing of situations.
  • An understanding of the legal frameworks delegates must work within, including;
  • Understanding the Law in relation to the use of force for personal Defence and/or the Defence of others.The Common and Criminal Law, including the meaning of ‘Reasonable Force’ with reference to Section 3(1) of The Criminal Law Act 1967, in relation to Defence of self and/or others.
  • The various elements of Health and Safety Statute and associated Health and Safety Regulations that relate to the use of physical force in the workplace, including what is meant by the ‘common-law duty of care’, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, sections 2, 3, 7 and 8.
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Regulations 3, 8 and 14.
  • How to apply the correct & safest way to defend themselves from a variety of wrist, hair & body grabs whilst standing, seated behind a desk, and whilst in a car for those in the community.
  • Know the quickest & safest escape from strangles.
  • How to apply an effective stance in order to deal with headbutts, punches, kicks, & knees to the groin.

Breakaways from the following types of holds from the front and rear of the body:-

  • Front – hair pulls, strangles, clothing holds, wrist grabs, body holds.
  • Rear – hair pulls, strangles, body holds.
  • Holds against walls, on the floor, over desks etc.
